Vaughan and Sabo Honored as Champions of Character
Katie Vaughan (16U-Taylor) and Lara Sabo (coach, 14U-Abromavage) were recently named as Fairfax County Champions of Character. They were honored at a ceremony on October 1 hosted by the Fairfax County Athletic Council and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
The Champions of Character Awards have been presented annually since 2001 to athletes, coaches, and parents who "go above and beyond in demonstrating good sportsmanship and character in youth sports."
Katie's nomination described her as "an ideal role model for youth athletics." As a military child, Katie has had to move multiple times, and "has found that sports provide an instant source of friendship and camaraderie." The nomination further notes that "her helpful and caring demeanor at school and church are an inspiration to those who need it."
Coach Sabo was described as "an excellent role model and determined competitor herself [who] inspires athletes to perform at their best." The nomination continues, "Lara stresses success both on and off the field and believes that softball helps players to become strong female leaders.... Most notably, Lara's teams are known for their sportsmanship and focus on the true spirit of the game."
Congratulations to Katie and Coach Sabo for this well-deserved honor, and for truly exemplifying what it means to be a Firebird.
